Gabriela Hernandez Blog
My name is Gabriela Hernandez, I also go by Gaby. I am the new Prevention Youth Specialist at the Community Engagement Institute.
I was born and raised in Pratt, KS and moved to Wichita in 2008. My parents originate from Chihuahua, Mexico. Estoy muy orgullosa de mis raices! (I am very proud of my roots). Mi parte favorita de mi cultura son las tradiciones y claro la comida. (My favorite part about my culture are the traditions and of course the food). I have one brother, one sister, two nieces, and one nephew. I married my high school sweet heart two years ago and 6 months ago we welcomed our son, Emilio, into this world. Outside of work I like to spend time with my husband, son, family, friends, watching crime shows, and shopping for home decor (Hobby Lobby is my second home).
I graduated from Wichita State University in 2016 with bachelors in Health Service Management and Community Development. Throughout my undergrad, I worked as a dental assistant at a dental family practice and as a billing coordinator at Abay Neuroscience Center. A couple months after graduation I sought out an interest in behavioral health and began working at COMCARE of Sedgwick County as a Care Coordinator. At COMCARE, I coordinated the healthcare needs of individuals with mental illness and/or chronic health conditions. This included coordinating access to preventive and health promotion services. I really enjoyed engaging with our community and promoting human health. For that reason, I am pursuing Masters in Public Health from the University of Kansas and hope to graduate this year.
I aspire to make a positive an impact in our community and better the lives of others through prevention.
I feel very fortunate to be at the CEI and look forward to meeting everyone in the near future!
